About the Research Center for Energy Networks

The Research Center for Energy Networks (Forschungsstelle Energienetze - FEN) at ETH Zurich was established to provide independent, credible, and applied research addressing the needs of both academia and industry in energy policy. FEN is dedicated to shaping a sustainable, reliable, and cost-effective future energy system, offering technology-neutral and independent quantitative analyses to utilities, grid operators, industrial associations, and federal institutions.

Project Background

We are seeking a highly qualified and motivated individual to enhance our team specializing in energy system modelling. The primary focus will be the application of our in-house energy system modelling frameworks to tackle real-world challenges at various temporal and spatial scales. This includes practical issues ranging from building-level energy solutions to national system studies and European-wide multi-sector energy integration.

Main Responsibilities

  • Apply energy system modelling frameworks to analyze and resolve energy system challenges across different scales, including:
    • Evaluating European and Swiss energy scenarios across sectors and international exchanges.
    • Assessing the economic impact of policy measures related to the Swiss energy system.
    • Reviewing the Swiss power and gas transmission network, focusing on balancing, congestions, and hazards.
    • Analyzing hydropower cascades and hydrological networks.
    • Planning sustainable multi-energy supply systems and grids for municipalities.
    • Optimizing building-level energy demand and supply.
  • Extend and customize frameworks to meet research questions and project requirements.
  • Conduct scenario analyses to explore pathways for sustainable and secure energy supply.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams and external stakeholders to generate and interpret quantitative insights for real-world challenges.
  • Disseminate findings through scientific publications, technical reports, and presentations at conferences.

Required Profile

  • PhD in engineering (preferably electrical or mechanical), focusing on energy system design and optimization or energy economics.
  • Significant experience in energy systems analysis, particularly with mathematical optimization and electricity markets.
  • Strong programming skills and experience in energy systems modelling.
  • Proficient in English, with knowledge of German considered an advantage.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills, self-motivation, and a willingness to learn.
  • Exemplary presentation and technical writing skills.

Work Environment

This role offers the opportunity to work within a highly motivated team in an international environment of established experts. Contributing to the Swiss energy transition and engaging in scientific publication is encouraged. The position is embedded within ETH Zurich, a reputable institution committed to fostering professional development and promoting positive societal change.

Commitment to Diversity

ETH Zurich champions an inclusive culture, endorsing equality of opportunity and valuing diversity in its working and learning environment. We ensure that the rights and dignity of all staff and students are respected.

Conclusion

Join us in making a meaningful impact on the future of energy systems and contribute to the advancement of sustainable solutions that address global challenges.
