The SML group at the Institute of Machine Learning seeks highly motivated individuals with a solid background in trustworthy machine learning. This opportunity allows for an initial appointment of 1 year, with the possibility of renewal for up to 3 years.
Role Overview
We invite candidates with expertise aligned with the following research areas:
- Mathematical Foundations of Trustworthy ML:
- (Robust) distributional generalization, transfer learning, causality
- Multi-objective settings and alignment, RL theory
- Statistical learning theory, optimization (e.g., implicit bias)
- Robustness, privacy, memorization, unlearning, interpretability
- Grounding AI/ML concepts in social sciences (philosophy, psychology, law)
- Real-World Impact:
- Addressing real-world issues in scientific or engineering domains using proprietary data, focusing on challenges like distributional generalization, multi-objective trade-offs, causality, privacy, or interpretability.
- Large Language Model adaptive evaluation and post-training with rigorous mathematical proofs.
Candidate Profile
The project scope will be customized to match your strengths. Collaborating with team members and mentoring bachelor’s and master's theses will be crucial. Ideal candidates will possess:
- Advanced degrees (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD) in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
- A strong foundation in:
- Theory profile: theoretical statistics, learning theory, probability theory, optimization theory.
- Experimental profile: deep knowledge of the application domain and mathematical maturity.
- A proven research record with publications in top-tier venues relevant to their profile.
- A collaborative mindset, capable of effectively working in multidisciplinary teams, while aligning with our group values.
