A World-Class Research Environment at the Nexus of Biology, Engineering, and Physical Sciences

The Biotechnology and Bioengineering group led by Prof. Dr. Martin Fussenegger at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) of ETH Zurich in Basel invites exceptional candidates to engage in pioneering projects focused on developing synthetic biology-inspired human therapies. This interdisciplinary research department merges theoretical and experimental biology with advanced bioengineering, fostering collaborations with leaders in material science, physics, and chemistry to drive transformative advances in systems biology, biotechnology, and synthetic biology.

Project Background

Advancing the Frontiers of Cell-based Therapies and Synthetic Biology

The group employs cutting-edge synthetic biology principles to engineer human cells and create next-generation cell-based therapies targeting a range of diseases. Utilizing innovative platforms such as novel biosensors, gene switches, and genetic closed-loop circuits, we design programmable cellular implants and devices aimed at therapeutic applications. By integrating fundamental discoveries with translational development, the vision is to shape the future of biomedical innovation.

Project Overview

Engagement in PhD and postdoctoral projects will involve:

  • Molecular engineering and cell programming to engineer human cells using synthetic gene circuits and biosensing platforms.
  • Development of novel biosensing systems for real-time monitoring of cellular states.
  • Creation of genetic architectures for precise therapeutic protein regulation.
  • Translation of research advances into programmable cellular implant prototypes.

Projects will emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration with molecular biologists, bioengineers, and clinical researchers to facilitate translation into clinically relevant therapies.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidates will be highly motivated individuals ready to bridge basic and translational research in cell biology and synthetic biology. Strong skills in molecular and cell biology techniques, including cultivation and engineering of primary human cells and mammalian cell lines, are essential. Candidates are expected to have an outstanding academic record (for PhD candidates) or a strong publication record (for Postdoc candidates), as well as the ambition to pursue a career in academia, industrial R&D, or biotechnology entrepreneurship.
