Advance Your Career in Seismic Research
The Swiss Seismological Service (SED) at ETH Zurich is embarking on an innovative multi-year applied research initiative aimed at improving the detection, localization, and interpretation of explosion events in underground ammunition storage facilities. This project collaborates with armasuisse Science and Technology, industry partners, and the Swiss Armed Forces to enhance monitoring systems for underground infrastructure.
About the Project
This research harnesses seismic and fiber-optic sensing technologies to create reliable solutions for real-time detection and characterization of hazardous events. Key areas of focus include:
- Evaluating sensor technologies
- Designing and optimizing multi-sensor monitoring networks
- Developing advanced detection and localization algorithms tailored to complex 3D underground environments
Collaboration between the BedrettoLab at ETH Zurich and the Hondrich underground test facilities run by armasuisse is a cornerstone of this initiative, culminating in experimental campaigns, field installations, data collection, and algorithm development, running from 2026 to 2029.
Key Responsibilities
- Experimental Campaigns and Sensor Evaluation: Engage in the design and analysis of controlled test explosions, and evaluate various seismic sensors and distributed acoustic sensing technologies.
- Network Design and Installation: Define optimal sensor geometries, participate in field installations, calibrate velocity models, and ensure quality control of data acquisition.
- Algorithm Development: Integrate multi-sensor data into existing seismological software, and develop algorithms for event detection and characterization.
- Cost Optimization: Contribute to the implementation of an efficient alarm system while collaborating with various stakeholders to facilitate system deployment.
