System Engineer for a Cloud-like HPC Infrastructure

Project Overview

The AIS Instrumentation Gym is a collaborative platform developed by the National University of Singapore and the Singapore-ETH Centre. This multi-tier ML platform aims to support researchers with cutting-edge scientific instruments and enable the exploration of high-dimensional scientific data through innovative machine learning techniques.

Role Summary

Engage in the management and enhancement of the HPC infrastructure for the AIS Instrumentation Gym. This role focuses on effective data mobility, policy implementation, and infrastructure management, ensuring the platform remains at the forefront of innovation.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee the HPC backbone for a cohesive research platform serving AI4S workflows.
• Implement data mobility protocols for secure and seamless data transfers between various research sites.
• Establish sustainable data retention policies with tiered storage solutions for active training and archival needs.
• Enhance federated reproducibility through designed workflows for dataset cloning and forking across multiple locations.
• Utilize Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools to manage and provision the core IT infrastructure.
• Install and administer system management and container orchestration platforms.
• Support multi-tenant environments by administering the management plane.

Qualifications

Essential Skills

• A degree in computer engineering, computer science, or a related technical field.
• Knowledge of microservice architecture and automation tools, including CI/CD frameworks.
• Experience with Ansible configurations, versioning systems, and CI/CD workflows.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes and IaC tools like Terraform/OpenTofu.
• Experience with distributed research infrastructure and understanding of HPC workflows.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with data-centric HPC workloads and cross-site research frameworks.
• Familiarity with the research lifecycle, including data cleaning and model management.
• Self-motivated team player with strong communication skills.
• Project management experience with Agile methodologies.
