Join a Leading Research Infrastructure in Data Science

The Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC), an esteemed national research resource in data science and artificial intelligence, is dedicated to supporting a wide range of stakeholders, including academic labs, hospitals, industry leaders, and public sector organizations. With a strong foundation from EPFL and ETH Zurich, SDSC operates from multiple locations: Lausanne, Zurich, and Villigen, where a large, multidisciplinary team collaborates to address diverse challenges in fields such as health, energy, climate, and large-scale scientific infrastructures.

Your Role in Transforming Research into Practice

As part of the project-based engineering team in Zürich, you will play a vital role in bridging the gap between research outcomes and production-ready data science infrastructure. Your focus will be on:

  • Transforming early-stage ideas and prototypes into reusable systems for real-world deployment.
  • Adhering to FAIR principles while enhancing usability, scalability, and sustainability of solutions.
  • Engaging in focused exploration and prototyping during initial project phases, and contributing to Minimum Viable Product (MVP) development as projects mature.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to build comprehensive end-to-end solutions, primarily focusing on backend, data, and infrastructure components.

Key Contributions and Collaboration

In your role, you will ensure continuity throughout project lifecycles, working closely with platform teams and IT partners to transition MVPs into maintainable, operational systems. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Co-designing solutions with users and domain experts, fostering a collaborative workshop environment.
  • Refining requirements iteratively to develop robust implementations.
  • Adhering to established engineering and data best practices, emphasizing reproducibility and production readiness.

Your Profile

We welcome candidates with varying levels of experience who possess a strong problem-solving mindset and collaborative spirit. The ideal candidate will:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to building functional systems that excel in practice.
  • Navigate ambiguity, actively engage with stakeholders, and iterate towards viable solutions.
  • Value quality, clarity, and long-term usability while implementing secure systems aligned with best practices.
  • Hold a Master’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a related field, or possess equivalent professional experience.
  • Possess familiarity with modern software and data engineering practices, including version control, testing, APIs, data pipelines, and programming languages such as Python, Go, or Rust.

What We Offer

Joining SDSC provides a range of benefits, including:

  • A stimulating, collaborative, cross-disciplinary environment within a prestigious research institution.
  • Flexible work arrangements and opportunities for professional growth.
  • Challenging and diverse projects that enable you to impact research communities and society.
  • Creative opportunities to experiment with and learn new technologies.
