Thoratec Switzerland GmbH, part of the esteemed medical device division of Abbott Laboratories, is seeking a motivated and talented individual to become an integral part of a dynamic team dedicated to developing cutting-edge medical technologies. Located in the vibrant city of Zurich, our team of approximately 130 employees focuses on the design, quality, and production of life-saving blood pump systems utilized by patients with advanced heart failure.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop electromagnetic motors for implantable and extracorporeal blood pump medical devices, with an advantage for experience in magnetically levitated systems.
- Evaluate motor concepts considering performance, controllability, manufacturability, and long-term reliability.
- Conduct electromagnetic analyses, including FEM simulations, to enhance torque, efficiency, and thermal performance.
- Optimize key loss mechanisms and undertake system-level efficiency studies.
- Convert analytical results into design enhancements and correlate predictions with testing data.
- Formulate motor control strategies for precise pump operations.
- Work collaboratively with electronics and firmware teams on motor drive integration.
- Engage in system integration, testing definitions, and root-cause analyses across various domains.
- Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturing partners to enhance motor components.
- Support sustaining projects for existing products, including complaint investigations and corrective actions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in medical device development, particularly with active implantable devices.
- A strong foundation in electromagnetics, motor design, and control systems, along with practical experience in embedded systems.
- Proficiency in control systems theory and use of modeling tools like MATLAB/Simulink.
- Experience adhering to medical design controls and relevant standards.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
- Proficiency in English is required; other language skills, such as conversational German, are a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in motor design and manufacturing.
- Background in reliability testing and endurance testing.
- Prior interactions with regulatory bodies during submissions and audits.
- Familiarity with PLM and design software such as Windchill, Altium, and Solidworks.
- Knowledge of statistical methods and tools.
