Opportunity Overview
Join a forward-thinking team at the Institute of Construction and Infrastructure Management, led by Professor Dr. Bryan T. Adey, where your research in data and process analysis can significantly enhance the digitalization of railway operations.
Project Background
This innovative initiative aims to redefine the operation of safe and efficient railway systems by alleviating the resource-intensive nature of centralized control and human oversight. With the advent of new technologies, operators must navigate a complex array of documents—typically between 50 to 80—to ensure compliance with safety requirements during system development. The long-term development process often necessitates adjustments that may lead to cascading impacts across documentation and project timelines. The ETH project "ProCargo," supported by the Swiss Federal Railways and the ETH Mobility Initiative, seeks to enhance the processes surrounding rail system development, particularly in the cargo sector. By leveraging digital tools, the project aims to streamline workflows and improve the efficacy of documentation, ultimately facilitating the early implementation of innovative, safe solutions in the railway sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Synthesize and clearly communicate the system development process relevant to SBB Cargo, comparing it with European standards.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements in the development of safety-critical rail systems.
- Analyze findings to propose hypotheses for potential process changes that integrate digital support tools and conduct preliminary assessments of those changes.
Collaboration with another researcher and the Development Systems Engineering team at SBB Cargo will be essential. Depending on the individual’s interests and available funding, this role may evolve into a doctoral position.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have:
- A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- An interest in data and process analysis, particularly within the context of rail system development.
- A solid understanding of existing system development processes and a willingness to learn about artificial intelligence tools, such as large language models.
Proficiency in English is essential, while knowledge of German is advantageous. Strong communication and presentation skills are highly valued.
