The Biomedical Data Science Lab (BDS Lab) at ETH Zurich invites passionate individuals to engage in groundbreaking research at the crossroads of data science, neuroscience, and clinical research. This role focuses on advancing understanding and treatment of spinal cord injuries (SCI) through innovative data-driven methodologies.

Project Background

This initiative aims to enhance clinical trial design, forecast recovery trajectories, and discern factors that influence patient outcomes, directly impacting ongoing clinical trials and advancing translational research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning of clinical trials by modeling historical control groups and crafting data-driven study designs.
  • Perform machine learning, data science, and AI analyses on extensive SCI datasets.
  • Conduct epidemiological analyses to identify predictors of recovery and treatment response.
  • Establish and manage reproducible data analysis pipelines and workflows.
  • Create data visualizations and reports to support collaborative projects and scholarly publications.
  • Collaborate closely with SCI clinicians and clinical trial experts from ETH Zurich and partner institutions.
  • Contribute to the organization of the annual lab retreat, promoting scientific exchange and team growth.

Candidate Profile

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent in Data Science, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, or a related discipline.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R, with experience using common data analysis and machine learning libraries.
  • Familiarity with statistical modeling, epidemiology, or clinical trial methodologies is advantageous.
  • Experience working with biomedical or clinical data, including neuroimaging or electrophysiology datasets.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • A genuine interest in contributing to translational neuroscience and evidence-based clinical research.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in collaborative multidisciplinary teams.
