Opportunity Overview
The Biomedical Research (BR) division is recognized as the innovation engine within Novartis, dedicated to pioneering novel approaches that lead to therapeutic breakthroughs for patients. Within BR, the Discovery Sciences department (DSc) is at the forefront of drug discovery projects, advancing innovative drug modalities.
Position Summary
Join the DNA-encoded chemical library (DEL) group located in Basel, Switzerland. We are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative Research Scientist ready to contribute to impactful drug discovery initiatives. Our team's mission centers on accelerating the identification and optimization of novel low molecular weight (LMW) drugs, radioligand therapeutics (RLTs), and emerging therapeutic approaches through the application of cutting-edge technologies. Leveraging DEL technology, we aim to discover LMW and peptide binders to disease-relevant targets, contributing to the development of new medicinal pathways in collaboration with a larger team across biology and chemistry.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive experimental tasks related to DEL screening for early-stage drug discovery projects, including the preparation of essential reagents.
- Execute DEL screening campaigns, analyze results, troubleshoot issues, and ensure procedural integrity.
- Innovatively enhance and further develop existing DEL selection methodologies, focusing on emerging therapeutic modalities.
- Analyze experimental data and effectively communicate findings during internal meetings.
- Collaborate closely within multidisciplinary project teams, fostering a positive and constructive team environment.
Essential Qualifications
- A Master's degree or equivalent in a scientific discipline such as biology, chemistry, or pharmacology; or a Bachelor's degree/apprenticeship with relevant experience in drug discovery.
- Strong laboratory background in molecular biology, biochemistry, and/or biophysics, particularly in the manipulation and analysis of oligonucleotides and proteins.
- Adept at adapting to scientific challenges and developing innovative solutions.
- Passion for exploring new technologies and methodologies to advance drug discovery.
- Collaborative, self-motivated team player with critical scientific and technical thinking abilities.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational capabilities.
- Proficient communication skills in both oral and written English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Interdisciplinary interest in the convergence of chemistry, biology, and technology.
- Practical or theoretical understanding of encoded library screening techniques, including DEL, mRNA, or phage-display.
- Experience in applying and developing computational tools for the analysis of extensive datasets.
- Prior involvement in identifying and characterizing LMW and peptide ligands.
- Background in programming for lab automation and NGS data analysis.
- Familiarity with working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
