Join a Leading Research Initiative in Agroecology

The Sustainable Agroecosystem group at ETH Zurich invites a highly motivated individual to contribute to a groundbreaking project focused on smallholder farmer-relevant agroecological innovations in Kenya. This initiative emphasizes the interplay between agroecosystem management options, plant-soil interactions, nutrient cycling, and the soil microbiome, all within a transdisciplinary framework aimed at enhancing the practical relevance and sustainability of agricultural research.

Project Overview

A significant research initiative known as the Agroecology Academy - Africa has been launched at ETH Zurich, aiming to deliver innovative agroecological solutions tailored to improve the livelihood of farmers in Western Kenya. This project endeavors to investigate accessible methods for enhancing soil fertility, crop productivity, income, and overall farming resilience while fostering sustainable agricultural practices. By bridging the gap between research and real-world application, the initiative targets three main areas:

  • Farmer-centered research
  • Translation of research into action
  • Knowledge exchange, training, and education

The project's objective also includes identifying universal principles that can be applied across the African continent, ultimately scaling research outcomes to benefit broader communities.

Key Responsibilities

This role involves the compilation of local farmer knowledge regarding agroecological practices, with a special focus on locally produced bioinputs to enhance both short-term and long-term productivity. Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting studies on local farming practices in Western Kenya through literature reviews, farmer surveys, focus group discussions, and interviews with food system authorities.
  • Performing a meta-analysis of locally produced bio-inputs across sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Executing rigorous on-farm testing of locally sourced bio-inputs in the region.

Candidate Profile

Ideal candidates will possess the following qualifications:

  • A PhD in agronomy, soil science, crop science, or a related field.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary projects assessing agriculture sustainability holistically.
  • A strong interest and practical experience in Agroecology.
  • A solid academic background in agroecosystem management, data compilation, and analysis techniques.
  • Experience with surveys, focus group discussions, and interviews is advantageous.
  • A self-motivated and organized individual capable of fostering a positive team dynamic.
  • Open-mindedness towards transdisciplinary research approaches.
  • Willingness to engage in extensive fieldwork in tropical climates.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
