A World-Class Research Environment at the Nexus of Biology, Engineering, and Physical Sciences

The Biotechnology and Bioengineering group, led by Prof. Dr. Martin Fussenegger at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) of ETH Zurich in Basel, invites exceptional individuals to explore opportunities in pioneering research projects at the intersection of synthetic biology, nanotechnology, and bioelectronics.

The D-BSSE is ETH Zurich's leading interdisciplinary research department, amalgamating theoretical and experimental biology with advanced bioengineering and promoting collaborations with experts in materials science, physics, and chemistry. This includes transformative advances in systems biology, biotechnology, and synthetic biology. Located in Basel, Switzerland—part of the BioValley, which hosts 40% of the global life sciences sector and many major pharmaceutical companies—the D-BSSE offers a unique setting for impactful translational research with excellent access to both academic and industrial expertise.

Project Background

Our group is dedicated to advancing the frontiers of bioelectronics and synthetic biology. We integrate cutting-edge synthetic biology with advanced nanotechnology and electrogenetic interfaces to engineer human cells for next-generation bioelectronic medicine. This involves designing programmable cells that respond to electrical, electromagnetic, acoustic, and biochemical cues, facilitating wireless, real-time control of therapeutic protein expression and metabolic regulation. We leverage innovative platforms such as direct-current-actuated regulation, electromagnetic programming of wireless expression, and closed-loop systems, aiming to translate these technologies into clinically relevant and minimally invasive therapies for various diseases.

Job Description

  • Engage in postdoctoral projects combining catalyst engineering, computational simulation, bioelectrode device fabrication, and electrical engineering to develop bioelectronic interfaces that enable closed-loop programming of cellular behavior and real-time monitoring of metabolic activity.
  • Explore opportunities to design novel bioelectronic implants and develop specialized control software.

Profile

  • Highly motivated candidates with a background in physics, materials science, or chemistry are encouraged to apply.
  • Expertise in bioelectronics or software simulations is ideal, along with a solid knowledge of electrochemistry and materials chemistry.
  • Applicants should demonstrate a willingness to collaborate closely with molecular biologists and bioengineers, possess a strong academic record, and show ambition toward a career in industrial R&D or entrepreneurship.

Workplace

The D-BSSE provides a collaborative and innovative research environment, designed to foster creativity and scientific progress.

We Offer

  • An impactful position within ETH Zurich, which not only supports your professional development but also actively contributes to positive societal change.
  • A commitment to a sustainable and climate-neutral university.
  • A range of benefits including public transport season tickets, car sharing, extensive sports offerings, childcare, and attractive pension benefits.
