Opportunities in Robotic Materials Research

The Robotic Materials group is seeking talented individuals to join their innovative project, funded by the ERC Starting Grant titled "Distributed Addressable Robotic Material via Wavelength-Division-Multiplexing (ColorfulAct)." This initiative aims to forge the foundations of physical intelligence in conjunction with artificial intelligence, focusing on developing sophisticated robotic actuating materials that leverage the expansive spectrum of light.

Position Details

Track 1: Fiber-based Soft Optical Actuator

  • Design and fabrication of high-performance soft optical actuators.
  • Create miniature, highly integrated fiber actuators with scalable manufacturing techniques.
  • Demonstrate multifunctional soft robotic systems.

Track 2: Soft Optical Actuator and Network

  • Design and fabrication of high-performance soft optical actuators.
  • Develop soft optical networks for light multiplexing.
  • Execute system-level demonstrations that introduce new robotic functionalities.

Track 3: Biomedical Soft Robot with Light

  • Synthesize biocompatible soft materials for high-performance optical actuation.
  • Fabricate minimally invasive soft robotic devices for surgical applications.
  • Conduct proof-of-concept demonstrations in medical robotics.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise master and bachelor students.
  • Act as a teaching assistant for the robotic materials class.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications for Postdocs (All Tracks):

  • A PhD in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field from a prestigious university.
  • Robust experimental background with a proven record of accomplishments in soft actuators, devices, or robotic materials.
  • Capability to lead research projects independently and mentor junior team members effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Essential Qualifications for PhD Candidates (All Tracks):

  • A master’s degree with an exceptional academic record in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related area.
  • Research experience related to soft actuators, optics, materials design, or biomedical robotics.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research.

Preferred Expertise:

  • Track 1: Experience in fiber manufacturing or functional fiber integration; microfabrication.
  • Track 2: Background in optics and experience with soft optical devices; microfabrication.
  • Track 3: Skills in polymer and biomaterial synthesis and characterization for robotic applications.
