The Engineering Geology group at ETH Zurich is on the lookout for a dedicated and imaginative individual with a specialization in computer vision. This role offers a unique chance to delve into the complexities of natural hazards, particularly in improving our understanding of debris flow motion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Enhance the comprehension of mechanisms governing debris flow motion through in-depth research.
  • Collect and analyze an unprecedented set of field datasets, including timelapse point clouds and video imagery, alongside auxiliary environmental data.
  • Process collected data to derive high-resolution estimates of displacement, velocity, strain, and surface changes.
  • Develop advanced algorithms focusing on optical flow and object detection.
  • Interpret findings to deepen the understanding of debris flow mechanisms.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of monitoring systems.
  • Receive substantial support to cultivate your research ideas and apply for third-party funding.
  • Engage in teaching responsibilities within the Engineering Geology group.

Candidate Profile

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Vision, Data Science, Computer Science, Mechatronics, Remote Sensing, Engineering Geology, or a related field.
  • Proven expertise and enthusiasm for machine learning and computer vision algorithms, particularly in object tracking, optical flow, and sensor fusion.
  • Knowledge of rock mechanics, soil mechanics, and/or landslide processes is a plus.
  • Experience with point cloud processing is advantageous.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
