Join a World-Class Research Environment

The Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) at ETH Zurich in Basel is seeking outstanding individuals for pioneering projects in supramolecular catalytic systems inspired by synthetic biology for therapeutic applications. This interdisciplinary department unites theoretical and experimental biology with advanced bioengineering, collaborating closely with leaders in physical sciences, materials science, and chemistry. Our location in Basel, Switzerland, within the BioValley region—home to 40% of the global life science industry—offers unique opportunities for impactful translational research.

Project Background

Our research focuses on advancing supramolecular nanocatalysis and synthetic biology. We apply state-of-the-art principles to engineer human cells for next-generation cell-based therapies targeting a variety of diseases. Utilizing innovative platforms including biosensors, gene switches, and chemical structures that interface with cellular activities, our goal is to design programmable cellular implants and nanocatalytic devices responsive to diverse biochemical and physical stimuli. By integrating AI-assisted chemistry and molecular simulations, we aim to deliver drug-free systems for precise metabolic regulation and disease intervention.

Your Role in Advancing Supramolecular Nanocatalysis

As part of this effort, selected candidates will engage in interdisciplinary projects that combine AI-assisted supramolecular chemistry, biocatalytic engineering, and advanced molecular design. The focus will be on developing synthetic supramolecular nanocatalysts and crafting innovative control interfaces that integrate with biological systems. Opportunities also exist to explore broader biomedical applications through close collaboration with molecular biologists, bioengineers, and other researchers.

Candidate Profile

  • Highly motivated individuals eager to bridge basic and translational research in supramolecular chemistry and synthetic biology.
  • Strong skills in supramolecular chemistry, biocatalyst engineering, and molecular design, with experience in cultivating and engineering primary human cells and mammalian cell lines.
  • Outstanding academic accomplishments for PhD candidates and strong publication records for Postdoc candidates.
  • Experience in complementary fields such as computational modeling and materials engineering is advantageous.
  • Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary collaboration and a desire for a career in academia, industrial R&D, or biotechnology entrepreneurship.
