Position Overview

The Learning Commons, Media & Research Leader plays a pivotal role in transforming the library into a vibrant hub of inquiry, literacy, media fluency, and global connection. This individual empowers both students and faculty to thrive as curious thinkers, resilient learners, collaborative leaders, purpose-driven citizens, and global navigators. Collaborating closely with school leadership, this leader curates resources, designs engaging learning experiences, and fosters a culture that promotes curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, and a sense of belonging.

Key Responsibilities

  • Literacy, Media & Reading Culture:
    • Inspire a love of reading through diverse, inclusive, multilingual resources.
    • Celebrate global perspectives and affirm cultural identity via literature and media.
    • Lead campaigns, author visits, book clubs, and events to strengthen a community-wide reading culture.
  • Research, Inquiry & Information Literacy:
    • Teach essential research skills, media analysis, academic integrity, AI literacy, and digital citizenship.
    • Guide students through key IB projects and inquiry-driven work across grades 6–12.
    • Collaborate with faculty to align inquiry and research skills curricula across disciplines.
    • Ensure equitable access to resources fostering ethical engagement with information.
  • Learning Commons Leadership:
    • Reimagine the Learning Commons as an open, inclusive environment for exploration, collaboration, and creative production.
    • Curate and manage a dynamic collection of print, digital, and multimedia resources aligned with curricula.
    • Partner with IT and Innovation teams to integrate makerspaces and digital platforms into student learning.
  • Faculty Partnership & Professional Learning:
    • Co-design and co-teach units embedding literacy, inquiry, and research.
    • Provide coaching and workshops on innovative approaches to literacy and technology integration.
    • Contribute to curriculum committees, ensuring alignment with the Portrait of a Learner attributes.
  • Management & Administration:
    • Supervise and mentor library/media assistants to ensure effective operations.
    • Manage the Learning Commons budget, balancing innovation with sustainability.
    • Ensure compliance with copyright and ethical use of resources.
    • Develop procedures to maintain an efficient and inclusive Learning Commons.
  • Strategic Vision & Advocacy:
    • Position the Learning Commons as a hub of inquiry, creativity, multilingualism, and global citizenship.
    • Lead initiatives that promote 21st-century skills: critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity.
    • Build partnerships with universities and organizations to expand student opportunities.
    • Stay current with trends in educational technology and media literacy to bring innovative ideas into practice.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A degree in Library & Information Science, Education, Media Studies, or a related field.
  • Teaching certification is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in secondary education; IB experience is highly desirable.
  • Expertise in adolescent literacy, media research pedagogy, and information literacy practices.
  • Proven success in leading innovation and collaboration across disciplines.

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • A Master's degree is preferred.
