Opportunity at the Institute for Food, Nutrition, and Health

Join a dynamic research environment at the Institute of Food, Nutrition, and Health at ETH Zurich, specifically within the Laboratory of Food Systems Biotechnology led by Prof. Dr. Nicholas Bokulich. This laboratory is at the forefront of developing bioinformatics methods and software for microbiome research, including QIIME 2, and is committed to exploring the pivotal role of microbiomes in food and human health.

Your Role

In this engaging role, you will be responsible for developing bioinformatics software that integrates microbiome and other omics datasets to gain insights into microbial communities associated with food and health. You will work collaboratively with a talented team of interdisciplinary scientists and engineers to enhance open-source software initiatives across a variety of research topics.

Key Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience in computer science, data science, electrical engineering, computational biology, or related fields
  • Proficient programming skills in Python, along with software development and engineering experience
  • Demonstrated experience in developing open-source bioinformatics software
  • Experience with collaborative software development using Git and GitHub
  • Familiarity with implementing GitHub Actions workflows
  • Strong interpersonal communication, teamwork, and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written) for effective communication with colleagues and collaborators

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in developing with QIIME 2
  • Knowledge of biological data structures and formats
  • Experience working with microbiome data (marker gene, metagenome) and other omics data
  • Familiarity with the conda and conda-build ecosystem
  • Experience with software containerization technologies (Docker, Singularity)
  • Experience in high-performance computing environments
