At UniBE, we are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of space research and planetary sciences. Our esteemed division investigates the formation and evolution of our solar system, developing specialized instruments for spacecraft to conduct in situ measurements, notably in the vicinity of Jupiter. We engage with renowned organizations such as the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA, showcasing our commitment to excellence on an international scale.

In addition to our space activities, our team works on groundbreaking initiatives in ground-based astronomy, like the European 39-m Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). Recently, we secured funding to develop an adaptive optics (AO) system for the 80-cm telescope at the Zimmerwald Observatory, in partnership with the Astronomical Institute of the University of Bern (AIUB) and EPFL.

Role Overview

We are currently seeking a skilled Automation Technician (Automatiker) HF/FH to join our team. This role offers the opportunity to work on the hardware and software development of PLC Systems, specifically relating to an adaptive optics real-time system for a ground-based telescope. The initial term of this position is one year, starting from December 1, 2026, or by arrangement, with the possibility of extension. Our salary is in accordance with the regulations set forth by the Canton of Bern.

Key Responsibilities

• Electrical concept and system definition, including the design of electrical schematics
• Preparation, assembly, and cabling of systems and subsystems
• Programming systems and subsystems on PLC System (Beckhoff)
• Interface programming for testing and script development (Python)
• Hardware integration, testing, verification, and validation of systems and subsystems
• Creation and maintenance of essential documentation

Qualifications

• Automation Technician (Automatiker) HF/FH or equivalent engineering B.Sc.
• Experience in programming Beckhoff PLCs and developing test scripts using Python
• Familiarity with C/C++ software development is advantageous
• Proficient spoken and written English; German is a plus
