Join an Interdisciplinary Research Group Focused on Energy Storage

ETH Zurich's Energy and Technology Policy Group (EPG), led by esteemed professors, is inviting two dedicated doctoral researchers to contribute to crucial advancements in the field of Innovation and Policy of Energy Storage. This interdisciplinary group plays a pivotal role in exploring how public policy influences technological transformation.

Project Overview

The positions are embedded within the -Grid-scale Energy Storage: Imperatives for Accelerating the Green Transition (RESTORATIVE)- project, funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA). This comprehensive initiative spans seven universities and four companies across ten European nations, forming a consortium dedicated to training 17 PhD students to explore state-of-the-art grid-scale energy storage technologies from multiple perspectives, including:

  • Technological development
  • Reliability and security
  • Integration and coupling
  • Socioeconomic and environmental assessment
  • Policy and regulation

Position Details

  • The doctoral research will be carried out within the Einstein School doctoral program for a period of three years, commencing in September 2026.
  • The primary focus will be on evaluating the competitiveness of long-term stationary energy storage technologies, applying and enhancing innovation theory-based frameworks, and utilizing system dynamic modeling.
  • The analysis will also encompass the implications of potential trade disruptions, aiming to provide insights for energy policy, industrial strategy, and geopolitical considerations.
  • Internships with Siemens Energy’s storage division and academic exchanges with the Energy Systems Lab at Imperial College London will be integral to the training experience.

Candidate Profile

  • A Master's degree in industrial engineering, energy engineering, innovation studies, technology management, economics/public policy (with an energy/technology emphasis) is essential.
  • An interdisciplinary approach is encouraged, valuing candidates who are committed to rigorously scientific work with relevance for public and private decision-making.
  • Team-oriented working style and proficiency in English are required.
  • Applicants must comply with MSCA mobility rules, having spent less than 12 months in Switzerland in the 36 months leading to their recruitment date.
