About the Role

In our Global Discovery Chemistry (GDC) team at Novartis Biomedical Research in Basel, Switzerland, we are at the heart of our organization's purpose, focusing on designing and creating new molecules for patient treatment. We are in search of a highly motivated and passionate chemist with a curious mindset to join us in inventing innovative medicines and advancing the frontiers of drug discovery.

  • Plan and execute chemical syntheses of novel drug molecules, utilizing in silico tools and advanced synthetic methodologies.
  • Conduct experiments in a state-of-the-art laboratory and evaluate novel synthetic technologies to advance projects.
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary project team to develop scientific hypotheses and prioritize novel molecules for synthesis.
  • Contribute intellectually to project success by designing novel compounds, synthesis routes, and employing data analysis tools.
  • Share expertise with team members through coaching and knowledge transfer.
  • Communicate and discuss scientific results during project and group meetings.
  • Uphold the highest standards of laboratory safety and infrastructure maintenance.

Minimum Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A degree from a University or Fachhochschule (BSc, MSc or Diplom) emphasizing synthetic organic chemistry, or equivalent training as a Lab Technician/Chemielaborant.
  • At least 7 years of experience in drug discovery, along with solid theoretical and practical knowledge of synthetic organic and medicinal chemistry.
  • A strong passion for hands-on experimentation in the laboratory environment.
  • The ability to critically interpret results and formulate new experimental hypotheses, while taking calculated risks.
  • An interest in disruptive technologies and science trends, particularly data science and automation/miniaturization in drug discovery.
  • Experience overseeing synthesis at Contract Research Organizations (CROs) is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with bRo5 chemical space molecules, such as peptides or siRNA, is considered favorable.
  • A mindset characterized by curiosity, creativity, and collaboration, alongside strong communication skills.
  • The ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented matrix environment.
