- Molecular cloning techniques (PCR, classic restriction enzyme cloning, Golden-Gate Assembly, and Gibson assembly)
- Preparation of plasmid DNA from E. coli
- Maintenance and transfection of standard mammalian cell lines
- Flow cytometry
- Production and purification of lentivirus and adeno-associated virus
- Titration of viruses using functional titration, qPCR, or droplet digital PCR
- Preparation of DNA libraries for high-throughput sequencing
- Other common tasks in molecular and cellular biology
Additional responsibilities may include working with mouse models, focusing on husbandry, injections, tissue dissection, and cell or nuclei isolation.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A completed apprenticeship as a biology laboratory technician or a Master's degree (or equivalent) in Molecular Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine, Structural Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, or a related field.
- Effective communication skills in English, both written and oral, in a diverse and international environment.
- A genuine passion for science, technology, collaboration, and communication, alongside a strong motivation for teamwork in a multi-disciplinary context.
- Extensive experience in contemporary molecular and cellular biology methods, as outlined in the responsibilities.
- Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and at least one cloning (e.g., Geneious) and plotting software (e.g., Prism).
- Experience with illustration software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, BioRender) and mouse models is a plus but not mandatory.
Working Environment
This position is situated within the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) at ETH Zurich, a hub of interdisciplinary research specializing in systems and synthetic biology, bioinformatics, and engineering sciences.
