Role Overview

Provide fundamental research and quantitative analysis to support a commodity trading desk specialising in energy commodities. This position combines physical market expertise, coding proficiency, and commercial judgement to inform trading and portfolio decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyse and forecast gas supply, demand, storage, and LNG flows.
  • Assess LNG cargo economics, infrastructure constraints, and regional pricing relationships.
  • Evaluate weather, geopolitical developments, and supply disruptions to determine their implications for portfolio risks.
  • Develop Python and SQL models to automate analysis, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Communicate findings to traders and portfolio managers through reports, dashboards, and discussions.
  • Translate research into actionable market views and trading recommendations.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline; a relevant master’s degree is desirable.
  • CFA qualification, or progress towards the charter, is advantageous.
  • 5–7 years of relevant experience on the physical side of gas and LNG markets, ideally at a utility, energy producer, or physical commodity merchant.
  • Demonstrated experience applying physical market knowledge to forecasting, commercial analysis, and trading decisions.

Technical Skills

  • Strong Python coding skills, including pandas and NumPy, for data analysis, modelling, and automation.
  • Proficiency in SQL for extracting, combining, and validating large datasets.
  • Experience integrating APIs and building reliable data pipelines.
  • Practical knowledge of statistical modelling, econometrics, time-series forecasting, and scenario analysis.
  • Ability to validate models and maintain documented, reproducible code using version control.
