Research Opportunity in Stomatal Immunity and Metabolism

The Plant Molecular Physiology lab at ETH Zurich invites a highly motivated individual to join our research team focused on exploring the intricacies of stomatal immunity and metabolism. Stomata, the minute pores found on leaf surfaces, play a crucial role in regulating gas exchange and plant productivity, while also providing access points for various pathogens. Although the rapid closure of stomata in response to microbial signals is well-documented, the underlying metabolic mechanisms that facilitate this response are not fully understood. The primary objective of this research is to elucidate how immune signaling alters metabolism in guard cells, ultimately promoting stomatal closure and preventing pathogen entry.

Research Focus

  • Molecular genetics in Arabidopsis to elucidate key signaling components that connect immune perception with metabolic regulation.
  • Phosphoproteomics and targeted metabolite analysis to pinpoint metabolic switches activated during microbial exposure.
  • Comparative genome editing experiments in lettuce, aimed at translating findings from Arabidopsis into contexts relevant for agriculture.

The investigation will delve into how microbial elicitors instigate specific metabolic adjustments in guard cells, the impact of these changes on ion fluxes and osmotic regulation, and the strategies pathogens use to evade these defenses. This project encompasses an integrated approach encompassing cell biology, biochemistry, plant immunity, and translational crop research.

The long-term goal is to identify metabolic control points that may be harnessed to enhance natural plant defenses, thereby significantly reducing pathogen entry into leafy vegetables and contributing to sustainable agricultural practices and improved food safety.

Candidate Profile

Successful candidates should possess the following qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Molecular Biology, Plant Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.
  • A strong interest in plant molecular mechanisms and cellular regulation.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques and/or plant genetics is essential.
  • Ability to work independently while also actively contributing to a collaborative research environment.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
  • Familiarity with Arabidopsis, microscopy, or omics approaches will be considered an advantage, but is not mandatory.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent research under the mentorship of senior researchers.
  • Design and perform experiments, analyze data, and interpret results.
  • Prepare and present research findings at scientific conferences and contribute to peer-reviewed journals.
  • Collaborate with team members to achieve collective research objectives.
