Join an Innovative Research Team

The Biomedical Data Science Lab (BMDS Lab) at ETH Zurich is inviting applications from talented individuals to become part of an interdisciplinary research initiative focused on exploring the integration of data science, clinical simulation, and critical care research.

Project Background

Intensive care units present unique challenges requiring clinicians to rapidly consolidate vast amounts of patient data, collaborate effectively with teams, monitor alarms, and document interventions in high-pressure situations. This project seeks to understand how clinicians allocate their attention and make decisions under such circumstances. By developing high-fidelity ICU simulation scenarios and capturing a synchronized dataset of clinician behaviors, the successful candidate will contribute to enhancing AI-assisted clinical decision support systems (CDSS).

Expectations and Responsibilities

  • Design and refine high-fidelity ICU simulation scenarios in collaboration with clinical experts.
  • Configure and operate wearable smart glasses and multimodal recording systems.
  • Recruit ICU clinicians for simulation sessions across Switzerland and manage data collection.
  • Preprocess and analyze multimodal datasets using qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Develop and evaluate machine learning models to integrate cognitive data streams for improved decision support.
  • Conduct systematic literature reviews in relevant fields.
  • Document and share research findings through publications and presentations.
  • Supervise Master's students and engage in teaching activities within the lab.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or Data Science.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, including experience with PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Interest in multimodal data, time-series analysis, or natural language processing.
  • Excellent proficiency in English; proficiency in German or French is a plus.
  • Self-directed with an ability to work within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with eye-tracking or wearable sensor technology.
  • Background in clinical simulation or human factors.
  • Familiarity with speech processing or explainable AI methods.
  • Exposure to clinical environments or health informatics.

Working Environment

You will be interacting with a collaborative and motivated team at ETH Zurich, gaining access to a unique clinical dataset and state-of-the-art research facilities. This role offers exposure to cutting-edge research with the potential for significant contributions to the field.
