About the Research Group

The Hospenthal Group at the Institute of Molecular Biology & Biophysics (IMBB) at ETH Zurich focuses on the molecular mechanisms of natural transformation in bacteria, a vital mode of horizontal gene transfer. Utilizing advanced techniques such as cryo-EM, biophysical methods, and in vivo functional assays, we examine the protein machineries involved in this process.

Role Overview

We seek an enthusiastic and highly motivated candidate to explore the translocation of DNA from the extracellular environment into the bacterial cytoplasm, where it is integrated into the genome. Responsibilities will include:

  • Expressing and purifying proteins
  • Conducting quantitative binding experiments focused on protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions
  • Producing stable complexes between proteins and/or DNA
  • Determining structures of proteins/complexes
  • Designing mutants and perturbations for in vivo experiments
  • Performing in vivo functional assays, including microbiological methods and fluorescence microscopy

Candidate Profile

  • MSc Degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, or a related field
  • Strong motivation to address complex mechanistic questions
  • Research interests in horizontal gene transfer, natural transformation, membrane proteins, and DNA transporters
  • Experience with protein expression and purification
  • Additional expertise in quantitative biophysical methods (e.g., fluorescence anisotropy, ITC, SPR) and cryo-EM will be advantageous
  • Proficiency in English for scientific writing and engagement in meetings and conferences
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to a collaborative lab culture

Work Environment

You will join a dynamic and international research team with access to cutting-edge light and electron microscopy instrumentation, including state-of-the-art facilities at ETH Zurich. This stimulating full-time position is set in a vibrant group dedicated to exploring the molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial evolution and resistance.

Benefits

  • A meaningful role within ETH Zurich, an institution dedicated to professional development and positive societal impact
  • Attractive benefits, including public transport season tickets, car sharing, sports facilities offered by ASVZ, childcare options, and a competitive pension plan

Diversity and Inclusion

ETH Zurich is committed to an inclusive culture that promotes equality of opportunity. We value diversity and strive to create an environment that respects the rights and dignity of all staff and students, enabling everyone to thrive.

Curiosity and Engagement

We look forward to engaging with candidates passionate about advancing research in molecular biology and biophysics. Further details regarding the project will be discussed during an interview process.
