Opportunity Overview

The Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems (HPE) at the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering of ETH Zurich is conducting groundbreaking research in power electronic converter systems. This research is pivotal for the future of energy distribution systems, particularly in integrating renewable energy sources and advancing traction applications in electric vehicles.

Research Focus

The lab also specializes in solid-state pulse modulators for medical applications such as computer tomography, cancer treatment, and contributions to CERN. Advanced multi-physics models and digital twins are developed for optimizing power electronic systems within this role.

Role Responsibilities

  • Engage in research focused on converter topologies and modulation strategies for low-power DC supplies with high efficiency and a broad range of input voltages.
  • Design new converter concepts for AC/DC power supplies optimized for high efficiency at low output power levels.
  • Develop multi-physics models for critical components and integrate them into efficiency optimization procedures.
  • Collaborate on a modelling framework development project with other PhD candidates.
  • Validate models and optimization outcomes by creating and managing various test setups and working directly with an industry partner.
  • Explore the potential integration of novel converter concepts into power integrated circuits to enhance features and reduce system costs.

Candidate Profile

  • A diploma or M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering with exceptional academic performance.
  • Strong foundational knowledge in power electronic converter systems.
  • Effective communication skills and fluency in English.
  • A commitment to collaboration within an international team environment.
  • An interest in detailed modelling and design of magnetic components and optimizing power electronic systems.
