Join a Leading Outdoor Education Programme

A prestigious and internationally recognized boarding school in Switzerland is in search of an exceptional leader to head a distinguished outdoor education programme. This role involves providing strategic and operational leadership for a large-scale expedition programme that encompasses mountain, ski, and adventure-based learning experiences. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a seasoned outdoor education professional with strong leadership credentials and a passion for fostering resilience and discovery in young people.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership & Vision
    • Develop and oversee the philosophy and approach of the expedition programme to maintain its status as a world leader in outdoor pursuit provision.
    • Implement a progressive and inclusive curriculum tailored to all students.
    • Ensure expeditions foster independence, resilience, responsibility, and growth.
    • Lead the development of holistic assessments within the expedition context.
    • Engage with the wider community to exchange best practices, especially regarding risk management.
  • Operational Oversight & Management
    • Guide the heads of Senior and Junior Expeditions in their operational duties.
    • Inspire and support all teaching staff in achieving excellence in expedition delivery.
    • Manage professional development and training for expedition staff.
    • Ensure effective departmental communication and alignment through meetings.
    • Oversee the recruitment process for all expedition staff, including guides.
    • Monitor student reflection processes and ensure efficient administration.
    • Prepare and manage expedition budgets, and ensure thorough documentation of all activities.
    • Directly manage the Junior Mountain School Programme and provide advisory support for summer activities.
  • Safety, Risk & Compliance
    • Evaluate safety protocols across the expedition programme and uphold rigorous risk management standards.
    • Foster an open culture for staff to discuss safety improvements.
    • Ensure compliance with current PPE and safety standards for all equipment.
    • Maintain high safeguarding training standards for all staff and guides.
  • Logistics & Equipment Management
    • Oversee administration and contingency planning for bookings well in advance.
    • Manage the expedition stores and inventory systems effectively.
  • Communication & Ethos
    • Ensure effective internal communication regarding expeditions to students, staff, and parents.
    • Collaborate with communication teams to convey clear messages to the broader community.
    • Uphold and contribute to the ethos and values of the institution.

General Requirements

The ideal candidate is expected to be a visible, motivational presence within the community and undertake additional responsibilities as requested by leadership.

Qualifications, Experience, and Attributes

  • Education & Qualifications:
    • Swiss-recognized International Mountain Leader/Accompagnateur, Winter mountaineering or ski qualification, and Rock Climbing Instructor certification.
    • First Aid certification, a valid driving license, professional proficiency in French, and fluency in English.
  • Experience & Knowledge:
    • Significant experience in health and safety, incident management, and outdoor education programme design.
    • A background in managing budgets and leading teams in adventurous activities.
    • Expertise in winter navigation and avalanche safety.
  • Personal Qualities:
    • A strong ability to build professional relationships within safeguarding policies.
    • Exceptional communication skills across all levels.
    • Proven calmness and leadership during emergencies in remote environments.
